SIDELINES : Notre Dame Kicker Might Need Collision Insurance to Foot Bill

Notre Dame High’s Chris Sailer continues to wow observers with his kicking. Sailer booted field goals of 43 and 58 yards in last week’s 34-13 victory over St. Francis, raising his season total to nine.

The 58-yard kick--made with distance to spare--was a personal best, and also a school record.

“I was glad to see him try it,” St. Francis Coach Bill Redell said. “I wanted to see if he could make it.”

Then again, not everyone gets a kick out of watching Sailer.

During practice, many of Sailer’s extra-points have sailed over the fence and bounced off the hood of parked cars. One such vehicle belonged to tight end John Genova.

“He heard I’d hit his car a couple of times and he was pretty upset,” Sailer said. “I guess he didn’t like it.”

Does he dry?: Defensive end Mike Waters of Oak Park High performed like a player possessed in a 37-13 victory over Carpinteria. Waters had eight solo tackles and four sacks, caused two fumbles, recovered another and pressured the quarterback into throwing an interception.

Quipped Oak Park Coach Dick Billingsley: “After that, he washed the dishes.”

Old news: Track & Field News magazine touts itself as the “bible” of the sport.

In the high school recruiting section of its latest issue, the magazine lists Cal State Northridge as an NCAA Division II school. Northridge has been in Division I since 1991.

Grant and Monroe highs combined to throw seven passes for 12 yards during Monroe’s 38-14 victory over the Lancers last week. Grant will have to work on its run defense again Friday night against Reseda. The Regents are averaging fewer than 10 passes a game.

Picked off: St. Bonaventure High’s Andrew Montenegro had a school-record three interceptions last week against Calabasas, raising his season total to seven, also a school record.

Honors

Moorpark College punter Robert Ralston, a freshman from Hueneme High, was selected Western State Conference defensive tri-player of the week after punting six times for 306 yards in a 21-14 victory over Glendale last Saturday.

Ralston broke his own school single-game record with a 51-yard average and set a Moorpark record with a 75-yard punt. The previous mark of 70 yards was set by Ken Lutz against Glendale in 1984.

Things to Do

Tonight, 7, Cal State Northridge gymnasium: The Matadors will play host to the University of San Diego in a nonconference women’s volleyball match. San Diego defeated Northridge in five games earlier this season, winning the fifth game, 20-18.

Thursday, 3 p.m., College of the Canyons cross-country course: The Hart High boys’ cross-country team, led by senior Brett Strahan, is favored to win its 12th consecutive title in the Foothill League finals. The Hart girls are shooting for their 11th title in 12 years.

Thursday, 6:15 p.m., Arcadia High pool: Crescenta Valley will face Glendale in the championship match of the Pacific League water polo tournament. Seedings for the Southern Section playoffs are determined by a combination of regular-season and tournament results in the Pacific League. Crescenta Valley won the regular-season title with a 5-0 record.

Thursday, 7 p.m., Bell-Jeff High gymnasium: The Bell-Jeff girls’ volleyball team will try to complete an undefeated season in the Camino Real League against rival Cantwell Sacred Heart. The Cardinals’ only loss was to Bell-Jeff last month.

In 1979, Lee Balkin of Glendale was the nation’s top-ranked high jumper after clearing 7 feet 1 3/4 inches or higher in six meets. He cleared a then-personal best of 7-3 1/4 to win the 1979 state title and still holds the meet record.
