Hoover Sputters in 37-10 Loss

The highlights were few and far between for Hoover High in a 37-10 loss to Muir in a Pacific League football game Thursday night at Glendale High.

Coming off of a 28-3 loss to Arcadia in which they managed just 41 yards in total offense, the Tornadoes again failed to move the ball with any success.

Junior quarterback Juan Marin completed just two of nine passes for five yards and a touchdown.

With Hoover trailing, 24-3, late in the third quarter, Tornado defensive back Jesse Marmolejo recovered a Muir fumble at the Mustang 20-yard line. Six plays later, Marin hooked up with tight end Mike Morin on a three-yard touchdown pass.

“We got a little something going in the second half, but you really have to be perfect to beat those guys,” Hoover Coach Dennis Hughes said.

Emre Ozgur rushed for 40 yards in 15 carries for Hoover (3-6, 1-3). Marin had 29 yards in nine carries.

Muir (7-2, 4-0) took a 24-0 lead behind quarterback Jeremy Bonwell, who completed four of six passes for 121 yards and three touchdowns in the first half.

Bonwell opened the scoring in the first quarter when he hit Danett Johnson on a 29-yard touchdown pass play. He added scoring pass plays of 64 and six yards to his brother, Rodney Bonwell.

“They have tremendous speed and the ability to score from anywhere on the field, which they demonstrated,” Hughes said.

Muir outgained Hoover, 331 yards to 88.
