Top Two Seeded Players Lose in Moscow

Sergi Bruguera and Todd Martin, the top two seeded players, were eliminated at the $1.1-million Kremlin Cup in Moscow. Bruguera, from Spain, lost, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, in the first round to Karl Kucera of Slovakia. Martin was beaten, 6-7 (5-7), 3-6, by Chuck Adams in the second round.

Baseball

Former Angels Nolan Ryan and Brian Downing are among seven sports figures to be inducted into the Orange County Sports Hall of Fame in December.

Others to be honored in the Dec. 18 ceremony at Anaheim Stadium are boxing referee George Latka, tennis champion Josephine Cruickshank, distance runners Steve Scott and Mary Decker Slaney and former Ram Rich Saul.

Hockey

The Stanley Cup champion New York Rangers have been projected to lose $7.7 million for this year, although the figure included only the first two rounds of the NHL playoffs, the New York Times reported.

The figures, prepared by Viacom for the sale of Madison Square Garden, also estimated the Rangers would have made at least $3.5 million in the final two rounds of the playoffs, bringing the team’s operating loss to $4.2 million, the newspaper said.

Sebastian Rambert scored a spectacular second-half goal as Independiente beat Boca Juniors, 1-0, in Buenos Aires, Argentina to win its first South American Supercup. Independiente and Boca had tied, 1-1, Nov. 3 in the first game of the all-Argentine final.
