CITY SECTION FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Sylmar Stays Undefeated With 59-0 Rout

Running back Durell Price and receiver Davon Young each scored three touchdowns to lead Sylmar High to a 59-0 rout of Grant in a Valley Pac-8 Conference finale Thursday night at Sylmar.

Sylmar (10-0, 7-0), which has won 39 consecutive conference games since 1988, clinched the East Valley League title outright for the fifth season in a row and is expected to be seeded first in the City Section Division 4-A playoffs. Sylmar is the only undefeated team in the section.

Price, who rushed for 62 yards, scored on three of his six carries on runs of 27, two and three yards.

Young returned a punt 57 yards for the first Sylmar score and added touchdown receptions of 19 and 68 yards.

Sylmar’s swarming defense knocked two Grant starters out of the game in the first half. Quarterback Adam Crespo left the game late in the first quarter because of a leg injury and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Running back Di-Onte Smith, who entered the game with 1,584 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns, was held to a season-low 19 yards in nine carries and left the game in the second quarter because of a leg injury and did not return.

Grant (2-7-1, 1-6) completed only two passes for five yards against a Sylmar defense that forced three fumbles and posted its fifth shutout.

Sylmar quarterback Greg Marquez completed six of nine passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns in three quarters of work to fuel a 53-0 lead.

Gerrod Taylor rushed for 57 yards in three carries and scored on runs of 46 and four yards.
