PREP GIRLS’ TENNIS PLAYOFFS : Doubles Cause No Trouble for Marina

Marina’s doubles teams were the deciding factor in its 10-8 upset over El Modena in a first-round Division II girls’ tennis match Thursday at El Modena.

The No. 1 doubles team of Richelle Page and Alison Rimpau got things going for the Vikings, winning their sets, 7-5, 6-3, 6-0. Marina’s Nos. 2 and 3 doubles teams also won their sets.

Except for sophomore Audrey Evangelista, who won one set against Hollie Fruedenberg, Marina’s single players lost all their sets. El Modena’s top-seeded Brandi Fruedenberg swept her sets, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.

Marina (12-9) will play Laguna Beach Saturday in second-round play.

In other Division II tennis:

Edison 18, Redondo 0--Cynthia Torday and Lucinda Yeung swept their doubles sets without losing a game for Edison (13-6). Teammate Kelly Foster also didn’t lose a game in her sweep. The Chargers will next face the winner of the Roland Heights Rowland-Redlands match.

Los Alamitos 14, Estancia 4--Melissa Rosenthal swept at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-1, 6-0, to lead Los Alamitos (18-1). The Griffins will play the winner of today’s Villa Park-Victorville Victor Valley match on Saturday.

In Division I tennis:

Newport Harbor 10, Westlake 8--Jennifer Landry and Erica Nelson defeated Westlake’s No. 2 doubles, 7-6 (7-5), to lead Newport Harbor (10-6). The Sailors will be host to Palos Verdes Peninsula in the second round on Tuesday.

Woodbridge 15, San Clemente 3--Natalie Exon swept her singles sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2, and Alyssa Artunian swept her singles sets, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for Woodbridge (17-4). The Warriors will play the winner of the Santa Monica-Santa Barbara match.

In Division III tennis:

El Dorado 13, Sunny Hills 5--Brittany McMillan and Susan Surapruik swept their doubles sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-2, to lead El Dorado (18-5). The Golden Hawks will face Rosary in the second round on Saturday.

Katella 12, Saddleback 6--Patty Dillaroman lost only two games as she swept her opponents, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0, for Katella (13-5). Teammate Kristen Sakamoto swept, 6-0, 6-3, 6-0. The Knights will play the winner of Paramount-Palos Verdes Chadwick. Saddleback finishes the season 10-3.

Rosary 17, Downey Warren 1--Eleanor Luzano won every game at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to lead Rosary (16-3). Rosary plays the winner of El Dorado-Sunny Hills in the second round on Saturday.

In Division IV tennis:

Brea-Olinda 9, El Monte 9 (Brea-Olinda wins 86-64)--Brandi Chaney and Beth St. Clair swept at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, to lead Brea-Olinda (15-6). Brea-Olinda will play the winner of La Serna-Central on Saturday.
