COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Advances to Water Polo Regional Title Game

Tommy Anderson scored five goals and John Chomin added four as Golden West beat Citrus, 16-10, in one semifinal of the Southern California water polo tournament Friday at Long Beach Belmont Plaza.

Ryk Wormgoor scored three goals and Jason Stanton recorded nine saves to lead Golden West (27-2), the state’s top-ranked team. The Rustlers play Long Beach at 7:30 tonight for the Southern California title.

Anderson had three goals as Golden West beat Rancho Santiago, 18-9, earlier Friday. The Rustlers, the five-time defending state champions, are assure a berth in the state tournament, Nov. 18-19 in Long Beach.

In other Southern California water polo matches:

Citrus 14, Orange Coast 13--Rodney Serge scored the game-winning goal with 18 seconds left to lead fourth-seeded Citrus (30-5-1) in the first round. Citrus scored five fourth-quarter goals after trailing, 13-9, entering the final quarter. Shad Whicker and Brett McAllister each scored three goals and Kaj Sturdivant recorded eight saves for fifth-seeded Orange Coast (17-8-1).

In the Chaffey women’s basketball tournament:

Golden West 73, Hancock 48--Deana Itow scored 19 points and Alison Juroe added 15 for Golden West (1-0). Julie Murdent had 13 for Golden West, the second-ranked team in the preseason state poll.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Rancho Santiago 94, College of the Canyons 73--Nick Holt had 25 points, 19 in the first half, for visiting Rancho Santiago (1-0). The Dons led at the half, 57-34.
