PREP GIRLS’ TENNIS PLAYOFFS : Los Alamitos Maintains Edge, Beats Villa Park

The Los Alamitos girls’ tennis team has been winning when it’s needed to all season.

The trend continued Saturday, when the third-seeded Griffins beat Villa Park, 12-6, in the second round of the Southern Section Division II playoffs at Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach.

A strong performance by Los Alamitos’ doubles teams proved to be the difference. The No. 1 team of Alison Miller and Michelle Schneider swept, 7-5, 6-4, 6-2, and the No. 2 team of Laura Springosky and Sonia Ralli swept, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, 6-3.

The upset over Villa Park’s top doubles team of Jill Riley and Shawna Lerer clinched the match for the Griffins (19-1). Villa Park finishes 15-2.

“I’m real proud of the doubles teams,” Coach Debbie Fleming said. “We won two 7-5 games and one 7-6 game. Those were huge for us.”

The No. 3 doubles team of Gina Rozelle and Erin White also fared well, winning two of three matches, 6-7, 7-5, 6-1.

In singles, Villa Park’s Faye DeVera dominated, sweeping her sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.

Fleming said No. 1 Melissa Rosenthal’s victory over No. 2 Katey Becker was huge for the Griffins.

Los Alamitos next will face Los Angeles Marlborough in Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

In other Division II matches:

Edison 11, Redlands 7--Kelly Foster swept in singles, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, and Susie Krum and Tami Demaree swept in doubles, 7-5, 6-3, 6-0, to lead Edison (14-6). Edison will face Laguna Beach in Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

Laguna Beach 17, Marina 1--Amanda Hastings swept, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, Lindsay Weiss won, 6-4, 6-1, 6-0, and Michelle Bray swept, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, to lead Laguna Beach. Laguna Beach will face the winner of Edison-Redlands on Tuesday.

In Division III:

El Dorado 10, Rosary 8--Linda Surapruik defeated Rosary’s Karina Bolanos, 6-1, in the last match to lead El Dorado (19-5) in a second-round victory. El Dorado will play the winner of Alhambra-Burbank in the third round.
