Judging by his pregame performance Saturday night, it seemed as if Village Christian High kicker Ignacio Brache would have to wait another week to get into the record book.

But don’t judge a kicker by his pregame kicks.

Brache kicked three field goals--including a 60-yarder--to tie a state record for field goals in a season, leading the Crusaders to a 16-3 victory over L.A. Baptist in an Alpha League finale at Alemany High.

The Crusaders (7-3, 5-0 in league play), who increased their winning streak to six games, clinched the league title with the victory over L.A. Baptist (3-7, 3-2), the defending Southern Section Division X champion.

Brache, who has 16 field goals this season to tie a state record with several kickers, converted from 60, 33 and 35 yards. He had two chances to break the record, but missed on kicks of 51 (wide right) and 52 (short) yard in the final five minutes.

“I was a little disappointed,” said Brache, who came off the field laughing after a 52-yard attempt fell a yard short of the crossbar. “But that’s OK. I’m trying not to get down on myself.”

Brache, who has 31 field goals in three seasons, is two shy of the state record for field goals in a career.

Village Christian scored on its first possession when quarterback Chris Coleman connected with Tony Yousif on a 37-yard pass play. The rest was left up to Brache and an unyielding Crusader defense.
