OUTLOOK
The two-time defending league champions are going to find it tough to win three in a row, especially with their coach, Len Whitacre, leaving to take over at Costa Mesa. Bynon, an assistant last season, will serve as interim coach. Also hurting the team is the graduation of four regulars, including Century League Player of the Year Maureen Skehan. On the positive side is the return of two potential all-county players: Miyake and Pennington. Miyake is deadly from the three-point line, making 53 last season. She averaged 14.9 points and had more than 100 assists from the shooting guard position to earn first-team all-league honors. Pennington, also a first-team all-leaguer, averaged 9.2 points. Whitacre was also excited about freshman Bynon: “She is a spectacular guard who can handle and shoot with anyone.” This year, the Spartans will concentrate on their full-court trap and long-distance shooting.
