Highlights

Two intense showdowns led to a co-championship between Orange and Santa Ana Valley, two of the top teams in Orange County last season. Orange won the first meeting, at its itsy-bitsy, storage-room-of-a-gymnasium. Gil Gonzales scored 22 points and Pat Harris 19 in a 64-58 victory. Olujimi Mann, Santa Ana Valley’s standout point guard, had his worst night of the season. He made six of 19 shots and was 0 for 8 in the fourth quarter. Mann and Co. got their revenge in the regular-season finale. Mann scored 28 points in the 64-41 rout. He scored 14 in the third quarter, including a variety of dunks, as the Falcons blew the game open. Santa Ana Valley’s success continued into the playoffs. The Falcons reached the Southern Section Division I-AA semifinals, where they lost, 69-67, to La Crescenta Crescenta Valley. Mann had 30 points, including eight three-pointers, six assists, four steals and two blocks. Orange reached the quarterfinals of the 1--A playoffs, but lost to Edison, 63-53. Harris had 21 points, but Gonzales scored only four. He had 24 in the previous game, a 69-61 victory over Corona. Foothill qualified for the III-A playoffs, but lost to top-seeded Sonora, 71-48, in the first round. Mann averaged 21.9 points, 7.2 assist and 6.6 rebounds. Gonzales averaged 14.3 points and made 79 three-pointers to give him 171 for his career. Both were named first-team All-Orange County.
