Five Hueneme High football players were suspended from school for their roles in a brawl following last Thursday’s home game against Dos Pueblos, Hueneme Coach Larry Miller said Monday.

Suspended for five days were junior quarterback George Jones and junior lineman Zwall Lee. Senior lineman Guillermo Lopez, junior cornerback Jermaine Johnson and linebacker Vainuku Soloway were each suspended indefinitely and recommended for expulsion with the school board.

Miller said the punishments were decided Monday morning after he met with Principal Joanne Black, Vice Principal John Saunders and Athletic Director Jim Lane. The five-day suspensions began Monday.

“In one or two minutes of fighting (the players) disappointed a lot of people who have done a lot for this program,” Miller said. “This isn’t the streets and we’ve got to send a message that this isn’t the way to behave.”

The brawl began in a handshake line when a Dos Pueblos player taunted Hueneme players over Dos Pueblos’ 35-28 win, Miller said. He added that all the suspended players were disciplined for their roles in the melee, except Soloway, who was in the locker room at the time. Miller said Soloway was punished for striking a teammate on the sidelines late in the game and then attempting to strike Miller.

Byron Williams, a Hueneme student who is not on the football team, received a five-day suspension for coming out of the stands to join the fight.
