OUTLOOK

Coming off a third-place finish in league last year, it would figure the Highlanders would be poised to make a serious run at preseason favorite Sonora. And they would, too, if La Habra could have kept graduating 6-7 center Andrija Kristich around. Instead, the Highlanders don’t have the muscle in the middle--6-5 senior Mark Pueschel only weighs 160 pounds--which parks them smack in a Freeway jam, jostling for playoff space. So McCarroll is considering going with a three-guard perimeter attack directed by Holbert (8.7 points), who earned honorable mention all-league honors last season. “He’s as quick as anybody in the county and will be expected to carry a big part of our scoring,” McCarroll said. Justin Marshall (9.0) and Ploog (8.9) figure to have the OK to fire at will, too. “We figure to be more athletic this year with three to four kids who can alternate between guard and forward,” McCarroll said. “We’re also going to play a full-court game. We’ll press and trap, and see if we can generate offense from our defense.” So the Highlanders are going to score a lot against worn-out teams, or get points scored against them in the half-court game.
