ONE RECORD FALLS

Brendan McGraw took over the top spot on the county’s single-season scoring list with a four-touchdown performance in Laguna Hills’ 42-6 victory over Lake Elsinore Temescal Canyon in the first round of the Southern Section Division VIII playoffs.

McGraw has 234 points this season, surpassing the previous mark of 222 shared by Mike Jacot of Southern California Christian in 1991 and Jeff Byrd of Rancho Alamitos in 1992.

ONE RECORD DOESN’T

Costa Mesa’s standout running back Charles Chatman finished the season with 2,500 yards rushing--96 yards shy of tying him for the Orange County single-season record of 2,596 yards set by Jeff Byrd of Rancho Alamitos in 1992.

A good run through the Division VIII playoffs probably would have easily given the Mustang senior the all-time mark, but the Mustangs were upset, 28-12, by Riverside Norte Vista. Chatman rushed for 191 yards in 16 carries Friday.

A SILVER LINING

Their football team lost by 40 points at Orange Coast College, but at least someone returned home to Redlands a winner.

The Mater Dei booster club’s 50-50 raffle collected a whopping season-high $1,764, half of which goes to the school and the other half--$882--to the lucky ticket holder. This time it just happened to be an out-of-towner.

ON THE RECORD

POWER OF THE PRESS

Pomona Ganesha Coach Garry Norvell said his team got all the motivation it needed to upset Rancho Alamitos, 12-6, in a Division VII game by reading The Times on Friday morning.

“What affected us most of all was the Orange County papers writing that we were already beat,” Norvell said.

YOU CAN GO HOME

One person on Savanna’s side of the press box Friday night at Glover Stadium was considerably more animated than anybody else. He exulted after every Savanna score and looked in pain whenever El Toro scored.

Was he a booster, an assistant coach, an overzealous parent? No, it was none other than Paul Waldrop, who led the Rebels to the Division VI title last season. But Waldrop went home unhappy; El Toro won the Division V game, 35-33.

THE NEW PIONEER

Jimmy Conrad was starting his second game ever for Western Friday, but he easily could have been the starter all year. Coach Jim Howell said Conrad showed good skills during spring drills, “but so did Dean Chambers.”

Chambers, who threw for 1,110 yards and 12 touchdowns during the regular season, is out because of a torn knee ligament.

“Conrad also wanted to stay with his friends on the sophomore team, so we kept him there,” Howell said. “But he’s definitely a name for the future. He’s going to be a real good one.”

Conrad threw for 120 yards but completed only six of 23 pass attempts in the Pioneers’ 12-0 loss to Servite in a Division V game.

ON THE RECORD

WEDGE-BUSTER

Maybe the best part about Mater Dei scoring 10 times Friday was watching Jose “Choo-Choo” Frayne run down the field 11 times (including the second-half kickoff on the Monarchs’ kickoff team.

Mater Dei’s self-proclaimed wedge-buster would either beat the Redlands blockers down field before the could set up or would hurdle himself at the kick-returner to disrupt him.

A LONG TIME AGO

Even though they lost Friday in a Division I playoff game, Bellflower St. John Bosco’s senior knew what it was like to beat Los Alamitos. The Braves defeated the Griffins, 35-0, when they were freshmen.

NICE TIMING

Bellflower St. John Bosco didn’t show much knack for timing before the Braves’ game Friday against Los Alamitos. The team ran off the field as the Los Alamitos band began playing the national anthem. They finally got off as the final chords were being played.
