Laguna Hills running back Brendan McGraw may have had other chances to break the Orange County season scoring record late in the season, but Hawks’ Coach Steve Bresnahan was happy he picked Friday night.

McGraw rushed for 240 yards and four touchdowns to break the record and lead the Hawks to a 42-6 Division VIII playoff victory over Lake Elsinore Temescal Canyon at Mission Viejo High School.

Laguna Hills (9-2) plays Temple City next week. Temescal Canyon ended the season 6-5.

McGraw, who entered the game two touchdowns shy of the record set in 1991 by Southern California Christian’s Mike Jacot, broke the record on a one-yard run with 34 seconds left in the half.

“We’ve had chances in the past few weeks to get Brendan the record,” Bresnahan said. “But it was good to see him get the record on a night when he had to work hard to get his yards, and it was in a legitimate game that really meant something.”

McGraw carried the ball three times on the Hawks’ next possession, the last went for a 50-yard touchdown run.

McGraw’s first touchdown came on a 50-yard run. He tied the scoring record in the second quarter when he capped a nine-play, 68-yard drive with a two-yard run. His record-breaking third touchdown gave the Hawks a 21-6 halftime lead.

McGraw scored his fourth touchdown, which gives him 39 touchdowns and 234 points.
