COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Advances to State Water Polo Final

Golden West advanced to the championship game of the State water polo tournament by winning twice Friday at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

The Rustlers (27-3) beat Diablo Valley, 14-12, in the semifinals after beating West Valley, 17-7, earlier in the quarterfinals. Golden West, the second-ranked team in the state, plays top-ranked Long Beach at 3:30 p.m. for the title.

Golden West will be going for its sixth consecutive State title.

This will be the seventh meeting between the teams this season. They have split the first six.

John Chomin had four goals and Jason Young, Tom Anderson and Ryk Wormgoor had three goals each in the victory over Diablo Valley. Matt Braun and Chomin had four goals each in the victory over Diablo Valley.

Long Beach (25-4) beat Modesto, 24-9, in the quarterfinals, then got past Citrus, 12-11, in the other semifinal.

In the Fullerton men’s basketball tournament:

Saddleback 72, Long Beach 64--Eric Amrozich scored 23 points and Micah Kroeger had 22 for Saddleback (3-0), which advanced to the final at 8 p.m. tonight against Fullerton, which beat East Los Angeles, 71-55, in the other semifinal.

In the Rancho Santiago Tip-off tournament:

Rancho Santiago 88, El Camino 73--Marlon Watson scored 15 points and Nathan Small added 14 for Rancho Santiago (2-0).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s soccer:

Cypress 6, San Diego City 0--Carlye Wind had three goals and an assist for visiting Cypress (16-0-2, 14-0-2). Wind, a freshman from El Dorado High, had six goals in two games this week and has 11 this season. Cypress is 38-0-2 in its last 40 conference games.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, Riverside 0--Becca Foltz had 12 kills and Nicole Mordhorst had 10 in the Rustlers’ 15-7, 15-7, 15-7 victory over Riverside. Golden West (19-2, 12-0) is ranked second in the state behind Cerritos.
