OUTLOOK

Bettencourt hopes he can bring a little stability to Pacifica. Last year, the team finished sixth after finishing as undefeated league champions in 1992-93. But there’s hope for Bettencourt, who says the team has some good size and enough varsity experience to make the Mariners competitive. While first-team all-league selection Pilar Surch will be missed, Bettencourt hopes he’ll get good performances from returning starters Kiyomura, Pawlowski, Jones and Green. He’s also counting on Hupf, a transfer from Long Beach St. Anthony, who will probably play guard. Also expected to contribute is Pawlowski at forward and center and Gilley at guard. Though Bettencourt has only been with the team since October and has been busy preparing for the season, he still thinks he can develop the team’s style and be ready for league play in January. Bettencourt thinks Garden Grove and Rancho Alamitos will be the teams to beat, but that the Mariners can keep up with the rest of the league. “The team has talent,” Bettencourt said. “It now needs to develop the confidence and a belief that it can go to the playoffs.”
