ROUNDUP : Harvard Advances in Volleyball

Harvard-Westlake High defeated La Jolla, 15-6, 15-4, 15-5, in the first round of the State Division III girls’ volleyball tournament Tuesday night at La Jolla High.

The Wolverines (16-5) avenged a four-game setback to La Jolla in the first round of last season’s State tournament.

Senior Amanda Selby, who will play at UCLA next season, had 13 kills as Harvard-Westlake disposed of the Vikings (27-8) in 50 minutes.

Teammate Lesley Coben added eight kills, while Carolyn Miller contributed four aces.

Harvard-Westlake, which entered the Southern Section playoffs unseeded, will meet Bakersfield Centennial on Saturday at a site to be determined.

The victory was the eighth in nine matches for Mission League champion Harvard-Westlake, which lost in the Southern Section semifinals to Long Beach Millikan.

Bakersfield Stockdale d. Agoura, 15-4, 16-14, 15-10--The Marmonte League champion Chargers (15-4) fell in the first round of the Division II state playoffs in Bakersfield.

Casie Hyatt had 16 kills for second-seeded Stockdale and Jill Levey added 29 assists.

Auberry Sierra d. L.A. Baptist, 15-13, 15-8, 16-14--The Knights (19-2) were eliminated in the first round of the State Division IV playoffs at Tollhouse.

Jamie Rempel had 12 blocks, and Roxanne Waggle had eight kills to lead Sierra (22-7), while Audrey Nesser was 19-of-19 serving, including three aces.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Mt. San Antonio d. Moorpark, 19-17, 8-15, 8-15, 15-11, 15-11--Dawn Smith had 24 kills, but the Raiders (13-6) fell to the Mounties in the first round of the state junior college volleyball playoffs in Walnut.

Teammate Tami Vaillancourt added 19 kills for Moorpark, while Gretchen Gulbranson had 68 assists.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Biola 78, The Master’s 69--Kim De Vries scored 21 points, Jodi Ageuda added 19 and Deborah Prociw had 16, but the Mustangs (1-3) lost at La Mirada. Ivana Kvacic scored 22 points for Biola (1-2). Lynell Johnson scored 12 points, and Courtney Dunham, Yvette Williams and Susan Flaming each had 11 for Biola.

Valley 64, Desert 58--Valley’s Erika Kusek came off the bench to score 15 points--including three three-point baskets--and had seven rebounds in a nonconference game in Van Nuys. Maggie Hause added 14 points--including four three-pointers--for the Monarchs (4-0).

Nancy Pinzon scored 16 points for Desert (0-3).

BOYS’ SOCCER

Chatsworth 3, Grant 0--Michael Price, Yobani Cruz and Guy Klein scored for the Chancellors (1-0-1) in the second round of the Reseda tournament. Grant is 0-1-1.
