Thirteen of the 26 San Gabriel Valley-area high school football teams that began Southern Section playoff competition last week will compete in quarterfinals Friday night.

Here is a list of games involving local teams:

Division I--Fontana at Bishop Amat.

Division II--Peninsula at Arcadia.

Division III--Westlake at Diamond Bar; Rowland at Serra.

Division VI--Claremont at Chaffey; Charter Oak at Damien.

Division VII--Santa Maria at Ganesha, Arroyo Grande at Covina; Mira Costa at South Hills.

Division VIII--Duarte at La Mirada; Norte Vista at San Marino; Temple City vs. Laguna Hills at Mission Viejo High.

South Pasadena and Rowland played for Southern Section water polo championships on Wednesday at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach. Results were not available at press time.

South Pasadena advanced to the Division III final with a 13-6 victory over Peninsula Saturday. Shawn Estep and James Buckingham each scored three goals for the Tigers.

Royal advanced to the Division VI final against Brea-Olinda with a 15-6 victory over Wilson. Tony Grosso led Rowland with six goals. James Castle scored four goals for Wilson.

The San Gabriel, Diamond Bar, Maranatha and Mayfield girls’ volleyball teams had their season end with losses in the semifinals of their respective divisions.

In Division III, San Gabriel’s Allison Carey had 28 kills in a five-game loss against San Luis Obispo. Rim of the World defeated Diamond Bar in four games in the other Division III semifinal.

In Division V, Maranatha lost in four games to top-seeded Brentwood and Mayfield was swept by second-seeded L.A. Baptist.

The Pasadena Poly girls’ tennis team defeated Placentia El Dorado for the Division III championship Tuesday.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Laura Bermudez of Citrus College won the women’s individual title at the state cross-country championships last weekend at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Bermudez, from El Monte, won in 18 minutes 11 seconds and helped Citrus to fifth place overall. Mt. San Antonio College finished seventh and Pasadena eighth.

In the men’s race, freshman Warren Wolf placed 13th to help Mt. SAC finish second to Riverside. Oscar Estrada of Pasadena placed ninth as the Lancers finished fifth.

San Gabriel Valley community college football teams went 0-3 in the final weekend of play.

Mt. SAC lost to San Diego Mesa, 38-34, to conclude its season 3-6-1. Mountie quarterback Cody Lee Smith finished his career as the school’s all-time leader with 35 touchdown passes. He equaled the career passing yardage mark of 4,610 held by former La Puente standout Anthony Calvillo and set single-season records for completions with 226 and yards with 3,121.

Pasadena lost to El Camino, 41-0, to finish 2-7-1.

Citrus lost to San Bernardino Valley, 49-10, to finish 2-7-1 under first-year Coach Dean Karnoski.

COLLEGES

La Verne University ended an outstanding season with a disappointing 51-12 loss to St. John’s of Collegeville (Minn.) in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

La Verne, which finished 9-1 under Coach Rex Huigens, was hampered because of injuries in its first postseason appearance. Running back Darren MacLellan, who was averaging 153 yards a game, played only one series because of a knee injury.

St. John’s advanced to the West Region quarterfinals against Wartburg.

The Pacific women’s volleyball team will compete in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics national championships Nov. 30-Dec. 3 at Chattanooga, Tenn.

The Cougars (22-10) advanced to the 20-team tournament by finishing second to Fresno Pacific in the Far West regional at Fresno last week.

Azusa Pacific, under Coach Lori Kildal, is in a pool with St. Francis (Ill.), Hastings (Neb.), Moorhead State (Minn.) and St. Vincent (Penn.).

Azusa Pacific won the national title in 1980 and is making its second appearance in the national tournament in four years.

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s volleyball team ended its season with a 3-15, 9-15, 15-6, 11-15 loss to Cal State Los Angeles in the NCAA Division II Southwest Regional at Bakersfield.

Jeannie Lane had 15 kills for Pomona and was named to the all-tournament team.

The Cal Poly Pomona men’s cross-country team finished 11th among 17 teams at the NCAA Division II cross-country championships at Kearney, Neb.

Cliff Curtis was Pomona’s top finisher, placing 32nd in 32:37.1.

The Azusa Pacific men’s team finished fourth and the women’s team 16th at the NAIA cross-country championships last weekend at Kenosha, Wis.

Sophomore John Gachao was named All-American for the second consecutive year after finishing 16th in 25:13.

Michelle Teodoro was the Cougars’ top women’s finisher, placing 49th.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s cross-country team finished 18th in the NCAA Division III championships last weekend at Lehigh, Penn.

Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball Coach Tom Marshall and women’s basketball coach Paul Thomas began their first seasons with championships in season-opening tournaments.

The Pomona men, who play host to Sonoma State on Friday night, defeated Pacific Christian, 115-76, and College of Notre Dame, 67-52, to win the Bronco Classic. Pomona’s Tyrone Merriweather, a transfer from Fullerton College, scored 28 and 24 points in the victories and was named most valuable player.

The Bronco women, who play host to Chico State on Friday, defeated Azusa Pacific, 83-64, and Southern California College, 84-51, to win its tournament. Pomona’s Jessica Eggleston scored 14 and 19 points and was named tournament MVP.

PREP OF THE WEEK

Ordell Williams, Claremont--Williams gained 195 yards and scored on runs of 66, 51 and 24 yards to lead the Wolfpack to a 38-0 victory over Rosemead in the first round of the Division VI playoffs.

Claremont, which plays Chaffey Friday, improved to 10-1.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Laura Bermudez, Citrus--Bermudez won the women’s race at the community college state cross-country championships last weekend in Fresno.

Bermudez clocked 18 minutes 11 seconds and helped Citrus finish fifth.

MISCELLANY

The Foothill-Citrus Baseball Umpires Assn. will have its first meeting Jan. 22 at Walnut High. The organization is seeking members, who earn $46 for working one-man, non-varsity games. The association will provide training in rules and mechanics. Information: (818) 964-9445.
