Technically Speaking, Tech Backs Into the Cotton Bowl
Texas Tech formally accepted an invitation as the Southwest Conference’s representative in the Cotton Bowl on Friday, a bittersweet reward after a 24-17 loss to Texas Christian.
“A team with a 6-5 record shouldn’t go to the Cotton Bowl,” Tech defensive end Tony Daniels grumbled.
Texas Tech clinched its first Cotton Bowl appearance since 1939 when Texas beat Baylor on Thursday, 63-35.
Tech, TCU, Baylor and Texas all have 4-3 SWC records and Rice (4-6, 3-3) can make it an unprecedented five-way tie with a victory today over Houston.
TCU, Baylor and Texas are all 7-4 overall, but Tech gets the Cotton Bowl bid because the other schools have all gone since Tech’s last appearance. TCU might go to the Independence Bowl.
Max Knake led TCU over the Red Raiders with two touchdown passes to Jimmy Oliver. With TCU trailing, 17-16, Andre Davis ran nine yards for the winning score with 3:52 remaining.
Davis, the SWC rushing champion, contributed 63 yards on the pivotal 69-yard scoring drive. He also bulled over for the two-point conversion.
