OUTLOOK

After Estancia, the league race appears to be open, and along with everyone else, Laguna Hills is ready to stake its claim. Brown said the program has been boosted by an infusion of players who have played extensive youth basketball. Mike Scaglione, a second-team, all-league selection, is expected to be one of the league’s top players. “It’s just a matter of him deciding to go after it and maintain a strong work ethic all the time, which he seems to be doing,” Brown said. Scaglione is joined by players from a junior varsity team that finished fourth in league but shows potential to be better, Brown said. “We feel we’ve made great strides, but we won’t know that for sure until we are able to produce on the court,” he said. Morton, who probably will start at the point, Gonzales, Bishopp, Tom Scaglione and Phan provide a solid nucleus. Makakaufaki, who is the first freshman to make a varsity in Brown’s 26 seasons at Fountain Valley and Laguna Hills, is an exceptional passer and will push for a starting spot. “Everyday in practice is a treat,” Brown said. “I think they really do feel that they are going to have a good season.”
