Donovan hopes a year of experience will help the Valiants move up a couple of places in the standings but a lack of height makes the job difficult. “We belong in the 6-foot-and-under league,” he said. “We have to run; we’ll get killed in a half-court game.” St. Genevieve returns four starters, led by Iaccino, the quarterback on the football team.

Quarterman, who coached the junior varsity at Santa Monica two years ago, has never seen any of his players in a game situation. “I don’t even know who started last year, but it’s better for me to start fresh,” he said. Adriano, Matekel, Reyes and Faith Baptist transfer Gales (11.7 points a game) give the Guards experience to compete for a playoff spot.
