Crescenta Valley
1993-94 OVERALL LEAGUE PLACE 20-10 5-5 4th
COACH YR. RECORD AT SCHOOL John Goffredo 17th
TOP RETURNEES POS HT YR Brock Jacobsen F 6-5 Sr. Blake Jacobson C 6-8 Sr. Jake Willis G 6-3 Jr. Mike Greco F 6-3 Jr. Nathan Sinning F 6-3 Jr. Vanik Abstephan G 5-7 Sr. Shawn Zargarian F 6-1 Sr.
TOP NEWCOMERS POS HT YR Jeff Reynolds G 6-0 Sr. Steve Williams F 6-1 Sr. Eric Broderson C 6-5 Sr.
OUTLOOK
The Falcons, Division I-AA finalists last season, are ranked ninth in the state by Cal-Hi Sports. Jacobsen, who averaged 21 points last season, and Jacobson, who averaged 10 points and 12 rebounds, are enough to carry the team. Jacobsen has signed with USD and Jacobsen has signed with Navy. “We can score from a lot of different areas,” Goffredo said. “I think the question marks are chemistry and defense.” A better question mark: Who will finish second to Crescenta Valley?
Glendale
1993-94 OVERALL LEAGUE PLACE 20-7 8-2 1st (tied)
COACH YR. RECORD AT SCHOOL Bob Davidson 8th
TOP RETURNEES POS HT YR James Fuller F/C 6-3 Sr. Arnae Boghossian F 6-4 Sr.
TOP NEWCOMERS POS HT YR Ara Sarkis C 6-4 Sr. Joe Kurdoglanyan G 5-11 Sr. Steve Avetyan PG 5-9 Sr. Bill Ganahl F 6-2 Sr. Chris Farmer G 6-1 Sr. Roni Eskandari G 5-10 Sr.
OUTLOOK
The Dynamiters have a group of good-shooting newcomers. Fuller, who averaged 11.5 points last season, is one of the area’s best all-around players. Kurdoglanyan is an excellent long-distance shooter, who might emerge as the team’s leading scorer. Farmer also can connect from long range. “We’re gonna take more three-pointers than we ever have before,” Davidson said. Glendale should be in the thick of a race that figures to include Crescenta Valley, Pasadena and Muir.
Hoover
1993-94 OVERALL LEAGUE PLACE 8-16 1-9 6th
COACH YR. RECORD AT SCHOOL Kirt Kohlmeier 15th
TOP RETURNEES POS HT YR Danny Clarke G 6-1 Sr.
TOP NEWCOMERS POS HT YR Eric Jenkins G 5-11 Sr. Jack Vartanyan C 6-1 Sr. Carl Causly C 6-3 Jr. Kwang Kim C 6-3 Sr. Hamlet Azarian F 6-1 Sr. Clode Moradi G 5-10 Jr. Arbi Baghdasarian G 5-11 Jr. Paul Shabazian G 5-10 Jr. Hoomann Shad F 5-11 Sr.
OUTLOOK
It might be another long season. Clarke, who averaged 10 points last season, is the only returning player. But Hoover has a hang-tough side. The Tornadoes twice defeated Crescenta Valley last season and things looked encouraging in summer league. “We’re a pretty good transition team,” Kohlmeier said. “We’ve got some guys who can pass the ball up the floor.”
Kennedy Cosgrove, Jeff Fletcher, Dana Haddad, Vince Kowalick and Michael Lazarus contributed to these capsules.
