Buena

1993-94 OVERALL LEAGUE PLACE 16-11 9-5 2nd

COACH YR. AT SCHOOL Glen Hannah 14th

TOP RETURNEES POS HT YR John Tobias G 6-1 Jr. Rob Labrot F 6-1 Sr.

OUTLOOK

Although Buena is inexperienced, its junior varsity team was 23-1 last year. Shaw averaged 15 points and nine rebounds a game for the junior varsity. Jackson was that team’s MVP, with 8 ppg and 14 rpg. Buena’s strength is outside shooting. Tobias led the team in three-point baskets last year. Buena is expected to be the third-best team in the league, behind powerhouses Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara.

OUTLOOK

Jones is the only player with varsity experience. And more than half the team didn’t play basketball at Hueneme last year. Davis is returning to coach after a one-year hiatus because of illness. With those changes, look for a different team this year. “People that saw us play and expect us to be the same are going to be quite surprised,” Davis said. Still, they can probably hope for a third-place finish at best.

Oxnard

1993-94 OVERALL LEAGUE PLACE 8-16 4-10 7th

COACH YR. AT SCHOOL Henry Lobo 4th

TOP RETURNEES POS HT YR Geoffrey Phillips G 6-1 Sr. Taj Lewis G 5-10 Sr. Steve Vaca F/C 6-3 Sr. Walter Glover F/C 6-3 Sr. Vinnie Santiago G/F 6-0 Sr. Jason McAuliffe G/F 6-1 Sr. Greg Jacobs F 6-3 So.

TOP NEWCOMER POS HT YR Daniel Sweeney G/F 6-3 Jr.

OUTLOOK

The Yellowjackets could be in for a surprisingly good season, although they still are unlikely to crack the top two spots in the league. Lewis, Vaca and Glover were full-time starters and Phillips was a part-time starter. Lobo thinks his team has good outside shooting as well as quickness to play a full-court game. Sweeney, who would have played varsity last year if he hadn’t transferred into school late, will start.

Rio Mesa

1993-94 OVERALL LEAGUE PLACE 10-14 8-6 Tied 3rd

COACH YR. AT SCHOOL Steve Wolf 10th

TOP RETURNEES POS HT YR Rob Wolf G 6-1 Sr. Steve Arneson F 6-0 Sr.

TOP NEWCOMERS POS HT YR Randy Fife 5-10 G Sr. Cory Wilson G 5-10 Sr. Micah Martin C 6-2 Sr. Tyrone Nunnery G 5-10 So. Will Hall G 5-10 Jr. Cisco Cabral F 6-2 Jr.

OUTLOOK

Because the Spartans have no size, they will use a three-guard offense. Wolf, no relation to the coach, is the best player. The best hope for strength inside is Arneson, but he was injured during the last football game and may miss the start of the season. “This team has exceptional character,” Wolf, the coach, said, “but we may just get pounded on the boards.”

Ventura

1993-94 OVERALL LEAGUE PLACE 10-15 6-8 6th

TOP RETURNEES POS HT YR Brian Fasulo F/C 6-4 Sr.

OUTLOOK

Of the top eight players, one played varsity last year, four played on the sophomore team and three played on the junior varsity. Ventura will be one of the few teams in the league running a half-court offense rather than an up-tempo, pressing game. Ventura will try to get the ball inside to Dixon and Lincoln. The Cougars could challenge for the fourth playoff spot.
