ROUNDUP : North Hollywood Makes Parting Shot

North Hollywood High’s Shannon Johnson took a pass from Terry Smith-Harris and made a layup with one second left to give the Huskies a 50-49 victory Wednesday over Santa Clara in a Simi Valley boys’ tournament quarterfinal at Royal High.

Arthur Lee led North Hollywood (2-0) with 19 points. Johnson had 12 points.

Highland 97, San Fernando 43--Jamal Dedeaux scored 30 points to lead the Bulldogs in a first-round game of the Saugus Tournament. Highland (2-0) outscored the Tigers, 38-4, in the third quarter, when San Fernando (0-1) started five reserves.

Saugus 76, Oxnard 61--Jeff Rogers had 18 points and eight assists for the Centurions (1-0) in the first round of the Saugus tournament. Todd Krogh added 16 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists.

Thousand Oaks 71, Quartz Hill 55--Jeff Nowak led the Lancers (1-0) with 16 points and Mike Lauer added 12 in the first round of the Saugus tournament.

Canyon 93, Sylmar 50--The Cowboys (1-0) took a 14-point lead in the first quarter and cruised in a Saugus Tournament first-round game behind Greg Minor’s 31 points.

Chaminade 71, Calabasas 56--Chaminade trailed, 48-45, entering the fourth quarter, then went on a 26-8 run in Coach Jeff Young’s debut at Calabasas.

Carmine Rossi scored 19 points, Michael Yang had 15 points and Matt Jewett added 11 for the Eagles.

Moorpark 56, El Camino Real 49--Moorpark’s Mike McKenzie scored six of his 22 points in the fourth quarter to stave off the challenge in the Simi Valley Tournament consolation game. Jones led El Camino Real (0-2) with 14 points. Moorpark is 1-1.

Royal 64, Alemany 62--Scott Hambly scored 27 points to lead the Highlanders in a quarterfinal game of the Simi Valley tournament at Royal.

L.A. Baptist 85, Santa Clarita Christian 12--Every player scored for the Knights (1-0), who got 22 points from Edwin Lewis and 21 from Kevin Aust. Fred Madigan had seven points for Santa Clarita (0-2).

Monroe 58, Burroughs 49--Marrean Robottom had eight points, 13 rebounds and five blocks for the Vikings (1-1).

Eagle Rock 71, Hoover 63--Ron Chambers scored 15 points to lead the Eagles (1-0) in a first-round game of the Burbank-Hoover Tournament.

Crescenta Valley 94, St. Francis 67--Brock Jacobsen had 33 points, Nathan Sinning 25 and Blake Jacobson 18 for the Falcons. Each of them had 12 rebounds. Crescenta Valley is 1-0.

Burbank 62, Marshall 50--David Hunt had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Matt Baker 14 points for the Bulldogs. Johnny Diep has 24 points for Marshall.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Simi Valley 84, Glendale 45--Tawnee Cooper scored 22 points and added 11 rebounds in a round robin game of the Crescenta Valley Tournament.

Newbury Park 69, Warren 36--Six players scored eight or more points for the Panthers (1-0) in a first-round game in the St. Anthony’s Tournament in Long Beach.

Taft 60, Fairfax 36--Taft trailed, 17-9, in the second quarter before going on a 15-0 run to take control of a first round game in the Eagle Rock Tournament.

Monroe 58, San Fernando 28--Shirley Sotero-Higa scored 13 points and her sister, Lindsay, added 11 to lead the Vikings in the first round of the Eagle Rock Tournament.

Hamilton 49, Poly 46--Dora Lopez scored 12 points and Alida Gray added 10 in a losing effort for Poly in the first round of the Eagle Rock tournament.

Nordhoff 41, Hueneme 37--The visiting Rangers (2-0) overcame a five-point deficit in the third quarter to win the nonleague game. Erin Barker led Nordhoff with 14 points.
