COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Falls When Thomas’ Shot Doesn’t

UC Irvine’s Tamera Thomas missed a free throw with 1.9 seconds left that could have tied the score in the Anteaters’ 72-71 loss to Notre Dame in the first round of the UCI/Marriott Classic Friday at the Bren Center.

Allah-Mi Basheer led the Anteaters (0-3) with 20 points. She scored their last field goal with 2 minutes 24 seconds left to give Irvine a 70-68 lead. But Notre Dame’s Carey Poor scored four consecutive points to give the Irish a 72-70 lead with 1:25 left.

Thomas was fouled by Kari Hutchinson with 1.9 seconds left, then made the first of two free throws.

Poor had 21 points for Notre Dame (1-2).

In the Golden State Athletic Conference preseason women’s basketball tournament:

Concordia 77, Azusa Pacific 65--Michelle Krank scored 22 points for the Eagles, who advanced to play Northwest Nazarene in the final today.

In the Redlands men’s basketball tournament:

Chapman 82, Menlo 69--Stefan Mumaw scored 22 points for Chapman (3-1), which advances to play host Redlands in the championship game tonight.

In the UC Irvine Speedo Cup swimming:

UCLA wins four events--UCLA women won four individual swimming events Friday in the second day of the competition at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach.

Annette Salmeen started the Bruin run winning the 100-yard butterfly in 56.04 seconds. The other three victories came from Megan Oesting in the 200 freestyle (1:50.91), Lindsay Etter in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.63) and Jill Jenkins in the 100 backstroke (56.16).
