Poly High Places Six Players on Times’ South Coast Team : Football: Jackrabbits’ selections are led by quarterback Toler, the only repeat selection from 1993 all-stars.

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

It was business as usual for the Long Beach Poly football team this season.

The Jackrabbits, a perennial Southern Section power, completed the type of season that has become all too familiar to their opponents over the years.

They finished 10-2, won a share of the Moore League title and reached the Division I quarterfinals before suffering a 7-0 loss to Los Alamitos. Their record was the best of any team in the South Coast region this season.

So it seems only fitting that the Jackrabbits lead the selections to The Times’ 1994 South Coast all-star team. Poly has six players on the first team and three on the second team.

The Jackrabbits are represented on the first team by defensive linemen Taeao Salausa and Junior Amitoelau, linebacker Jerry Sprewell, defensive back Cedric Gay, offensive lineman Alex Maliga and quarterback Rob Toler.

Long Beach Jordan placed three players on the first team and four on the second and San Gabriel Valley League co-champion Paramount had three on the first and three on the second.

There were 13 schools represented on the first and second squads. The only repeat first-team selection is Toler.

The only juniors on the first team are kicker Marcelino Herrera of Paramount and linebacker Michael Balloue of Dominguez.

Selections were based on ballots cast by area coaches, all of whom were asked to participate, and a poll of Times sportswriters.

Players named to the 23-player first team, along with their parents and coaches, will be guests of The Times at an awards brunch at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Cerritos Sheraton. The winners of the South Coast back, lineman and coach of the year awards will be announced at the brunch.

A look at the all-stars:

OFFENSE

Brian Haywood (Cerritos, receiver)--An integral member of a high-powered passing attack, the 6-foot and 180-pound Haywood led the South Coast with 72 receptions for more than 1,200 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also returned a punt for a touchdown and had an interception on defense. He has been recruited by USC, San Diego State and Oregon State.

Brian Walsh (St. Anthony, receiver)--The 5-11 and 180-pound had 60 catches for 836 yards and three touchdowns to spark St. Anthony to a 9-3 record and berth in the Division IX quarterfinals. He has been recruited by Colorado, Illinois and New Mexico State.

Roland Morris (Paramount, lineman)--One of the biggest factors behind Paramount’s success on offense was the blocking it received from the 6-3, 269-pound Morris. A dominating blocker at the point of attack with exceptional quickness, he was also a standout on the defensive line for a Paramount team that finished 9-3 and reached the Division II quarterfinals.

Alex Garcia (St. John Bosco, lineman)--Another solid blocker is the 6-2, 265-pound Garcia, who helped lead the Braves into the Division I playoffs. A two-time All-Del Rey League selection, he is also regarded as one of the top college prospects in the South Coast. Among the list of colleges recruiting him are Colorado, Washington, Colorado State and Kansas.

Alex Maliga (Long Beach Poly, lineman)--On a first-team offensive line that averages nearly 275 pounds, Maliga is the biggest by far at 6-3 and 330. An All-Moore League selection, he is considered a top college prospect having been recruited by Pacific 10 Conference teams such as Rose Bowl-bound Oregon, Oregon State, Washington and Washington State.

Michael Brown (Long Beach Jordan, lineman)--It was a milestone year for Jordan, which won a playoff game for the first time since 1947, finished at 8-4 and reached the Division I quarterfinals. The 6-4, 275-pound Brown played no small role in the team’s success. He was regarded as the top blocker on a potent offensive team.

David Stamper (St. Anthony, lineman)--Perhaps the top two-way player on The Times’ team, the 6-2, 230-pound Stamper was regarded as one of the premier all-around players in the Camino Real League. He has been recruited by California, New Mexico and Southern Methodist.

Rob Toler (Long Beach Poly, quarterback)--Toler’s statistics--1,700 yards passing, 15 touchdowns and four interceptions--told only part of his story. The 6-2, 185-pound quarterback became a team leader, guiding Poly to a 20-4 record the last two seasons. Toler was named Moore League most valuable offensive player.

Michael Fletcher (Paramount, back)--It is anyone’s guess where Paramount would have finished without the play of the 5-11, 185-pound Fletcher. A quarterback who is listed as a running back, he rushed for 1,318 yards and 18 touchdowns in only 110 carries and passed for 1,126 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Demond Winston (Artesia, back)--For sheer running ability, you would be hard-pressed to find a better back than the 5-7, 160-pound Winston. He finished with 1,844 yards rushing and 27 touchdowns in only 129 carries. He is also a good receiver who had two touchdown receptions in Artesia’s loss to Bloomington in the Division VIII quarterfinals.

LeJuan Gibbons (Long Beach Jordan, back)--Gibbons is one of the fastest backs in the state, ranking among California’s best in the 100-meter dash. He rushed for 1,162 yards and 12 touchdowns in only 107 carries, including eight runs that covered 60 or more yards. He has been recruited Washington, Arizona, Tennessee and Oregon.

Marcelino Herrera (Paramount, kicker)--At 5-10 and 165 pounds, Herrera also played an important role in Paramount’s success. He made seven of nine field-goal attempts, including a 56-yarder for his team’s only points in a 21-3 loss to Quartz Hill in the Division II quarterfinals. He also made 38 of 40 extra points.

DEFENSE

Howard Faagata (Long Beach Jordan, lineman)--The 6-3, 255-pound Faagata always seemed to show up in the opponents’ backfield. He earned the reputation as a big-play pass rusher with 12 tackles for losses, including four quarterback sacks, to spark the Jordan defense.

Taeao Salausa (Long Beach Poly, lineman)--The 6-3, 230-pound Salausa was a dominant player. A difficult player to block, he finished with 12 quarterback sacks and a fumble recovery. If he improves his work in the classroom, major colleges will come calling.

Junior Amitoelau (Long Beach Poly, lineman)--The 6-2, 280-pound Amitoelau ranked among the team leaders with 12 quarterback sacks and three fumble recoveries to propel a fierce pass rush.

Davelle Gladney (Dominguez, lineman)--Gladney, a 5-11, 235-pound lineman, helped lead his team into the Division II playoffs. He earned accolades for his pass-rushing ability and ranked among team leaders in quarterback sacks and tackles.

Jerry Sprewell (Long Beach Poly, linebacker)--He wasn’t the biggest player on Poly’s defensive unit at 6-foot and 190 pounds, but it was difficult to judge by the way he played. Sprewell was credited with three fumble recoveries, two interceptions, four quarterback sacks, a blocked punt and forced three other fumbles.

Michael Balloue (Dominguez, linebacker)--He is the youngest member of the first team and one of the smallest at 5-10 and 175 pounds. But there is a good reason Dominguez Coach Willie Donerson calls Balloue the best linebacker he has coached in 11 years at the school. Balloue had 89 unassisted tackles and recovered three fumbles.

Matt Dempsey (Lakewood, linebacker)--One of the best all-around athletes on the team is the 6-2, 215-pound Dempsey, who helped guide the Lancers to a share of the Moore League title with Jordan and Poly. A solid pass rusher, Dempsey is also an all-league baseball player and a college prospect in both sports.

Raul Tapia (St. John Bosco, linebacker)--Playing in the Del Rey League, probably the strongest league in Southern California, the 5-11, 225 Tapia made a lasting impression on the competition. The all-league selection had 164 unassisted tackles, 10 sacks and forced 10 fumbles during the last two years.

Josh Perkins (Lakewood, defensive back)--A talented two-way player, the 5-9, 185-pound Perkins earned his way onto the defensive unit with his reputation as a premier coverage back. He had two interceptions and also propelled Lakewood on offense by rushing for more than 800 yards.

Cedrick Gay (Long Beach Poly, defensive back)--It would be difficult to find a more active safety than the 6-3, 185-pound Gay. He led the South Coast in interceptions with seven and averaged more than five tackles a game. He has been recruited by Oregon, Washington, Fresno State and San Diego State.

Jonathan DeBie (Valley Christian, defensive back)--One of the most versatile players on the squad is the 6-2, 190-pound DeBie. He had three interceptions at strong safety, caught 30 passes for 308 yards as a wide receiver in only eight games and averaged 45.25 yards a punt.
