Coach Willie West can list the reasons Crenshaw High has lost only four home basketball games since 1970: Tim Hovland of Westchester; Bobby Terrell of Carson; Jeep Jackson of Gardena and Brandon Martin of Washington.

Olujima Mann threatened to join this group Thursday night as he led Santa Ana Valley to a 10-point lead entering the fourth quarter.

But with 6 1/2 minutes left, the 6-foot-4 point guard fouled out and the Cougars came storming back behind the outside shooting of Ronnie Arch for an 88-80 nonleague victory.

The departure of Mann certainly helped the Cougars (5-0), but the thought of West ordering his players to run laps was equally motivating.

“Coach West said we would be running until midnight,” said Arch, who scored 24 of his game-high 35 points in the second half.

Crenshaw 6-foot-6 forward Raymond Palmer, who added 14 points, said he was confident his team would have won even if Mann hadn’t fouled out.

“It would have been closer, but we win close games,” he said.

After Santa Ana Valley raced to a 7-0 margin, the Cougars ran off eight unanswered points to take a lead they would not relinquish until midway through the third quarter.

The Falcons made seven three-point shots and had another three-point play to outscore Crenshaw, 33-19, and take a 65-55 lead.

During the third quarter, however, Mann was whistled for his third and fourth fouls and went to the bench with 15 seconds left.

Santa Ana Valley Coach Rich Prospero decided to send Mann back into the game to begin the fourth quarter.

The Falcons, who had 28 turnovers, had trouble moving the ball against Crenshaw’s press and Mann was the only player who could handle the ball effectively.

Mann, however, fouled out after diving after a loose ball.

“I tried to get the ball, but I ran into the defender,” said Mann, who finished with 16 points.

The Falcons’ Ike Harmon, who had 31 points, suffered the most after Mann fouled out as his teammates were unable to effectively pass the ball inside.

“They shot a lot of threes and made some big ones,” West said. “But I thought if we kept pressing them it would get to their legs.”
