After a tough 10-point loss at No. 9 Duke, this was supposed to be exactly what Michigan needed: a home game against an Ivy League school.

But Pennsylvania is the best in the Ivy, and the Quakers weren’t quite what the 25th-ranked Wolverines had in mind.

Jerome Allen’s short jump-hook shot with four seconds to play Tuesday night lifted Penn to a 62-60 victory.

“I just wanted a jump shot,” said Allen, who was averaging 20.8 points but who scored only six against Michigan. “I just wanted enough to get fouled. I was struggling all night. Even though I knew I was struggling, I wanted to stay in the game and do something to help the team win.”

It was the second consecutive loss for Michigan, which, at 4-4, is off to its worst start since 1981; and the fourth consecutive victory for the Quakers after an opening-night loss to Canisius.

“It’s tough,” said Michigan’s Ray Jackson, who played much of the second half with four fouls and was held to six points. “You would think after losing to Duke you’d be motivated to play even harder.”

No. 17 Cincinnati 91, No. 11 Minnesota 88--LaZelle Durden scored a season-high 25 points, including a game-tying three-point basket with 4.4 seconds to play in regulation and a key three-point goal in overtime, to lead the Bearcats over previously unbeaten Minnesota at Minneapolis.

Durden had five three-point baskets for the fourth game in a row as Cincinnati (5-2) stopped the Golden Gophers (6-1) from reaching their best start in Coach Clem Haskins’ nine seasons.

Freshman forward Danny Fortson had 19 points, 17 in the first half; and center Art Long, returning from a two-game disciplinary suspension, scored 16 of his 18 points after halftime.

Voshon Lenard led the Gophers with 19, two of them coming on free throws for a 77-74 lead with 18.2 seconds to play in regulation. But Durden’s three-point goal forced overtime.

The Gophers led twice in overtime, but Keith LeGree put Cincinnati ahead to stay with a layup.

No. 19 Ohio University 90, Wright State 56--Gary Trent scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Bobcats (7-2) beat the Raiders (2-3) easily at Athens, Ohio.
