COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Butler’s Late Burst Leads Golden West

Tyrone Butler scored the final four points of the game Thursday to lead Golden West to a 76-73 upset over Santa Monica, 10th-ranked in the state, in the first round of the Cypress men’s basketball tournament.

Butler made a basket with 1:36 left to put Golden West ahead, 74-73, then sealed the victory by making two free throws with 10 seconds remaining.

Golden West (5-7) had four players score in double figures, led by Rod Scheuerman with 16 points. Butler and Michael Dean each scored 14 points and Greg Rosenberg had 12.

Damon Ollie had 25 points to lead Santa Monica (8-1).

In another tournament game:

Victor Valley 72, Cypress 65--Jeff Cummins scored 20 points and Matt Kennedy added 17 for Cypress. The Chargers (10-4) play El Camino in a consolation-round game today at 4 p.m.

In the Pasadena men’s basketball Tournament:

Cuesta 109, Rancho Santiago 100--Nick Holt scored 28 points, including four three-point baskets, Jim Harris had 21 points and Jon Surface 16 for Rancho Santiago (8-3).

Colin Bryant led six Cuesta players in double figures with 20 points.

Los Angeles Valley 77, Fullerton 76--Jason Cunningham missed two shots that could have won the game in the final six seconds for Fullerton.

Fullerton trailed by one point with seven seconds left after Marcus Austin made two free throws. Valley turned over the ball on the subsequent inbounds pass. Cunningham then missed an eight-foot jumper, got the rebound and his shot from about three feet away rolled off the rim as time expired.

Marcus Austin was Fullerton’s leading scorer with 24 points. Scott Davis had 17 points for the Hornets (7-7).
