Hart Making Plans for a Hawaii Trip

The Hart High football team, which advanced to the Southern Section Division II championship game last weekend, is expected to open the 1995 season with a nonleague game in Hawaii, Coach Mike Herrington said.

Herrington said he is “99% sure” the team will open against St. Louis High, a parochial school in Honolulu. Final word is expected in January, he said.

Hart’s Santa Clarita rival Canyon defeated St. Louis in Hawaii in 1990.

Hart, which finished the 1994 season 13-1 and was ranked 13th in the state by Cal-Hi Sports, has several key players returning next fall, including quarterback Steve McKeon, who led California passers with 2,931 yards. Running back Ted Iacenda, who finished fourth in the state with 41 touchdowns, also returns.

Hart also has an open date during the weekend of Oct. 14-15 and attempted to schedule a game against national power Concord De La Salle, which finished the season 13-0 and was ranked No. 1 in the state.

Herrington said the deal fell through when De La Salle officials declined to play the game at Hart.

“We already have one road trip (to Hawaii) lined up,” Herrington said. “No way we can make another one. It would have been appealing, except for the Hawaii situation.”
