COMMUNITY COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL : Orange Coast Holds On, Beats L.A. Trade Tech

Orange Coast scored only eight points in the final 10 minutes but hung on for a 67-66 victory over Los Angeles Trade Tech on Sunday in the consolation championship of the Coast women’s basketball tournament.

OCC led, 67-66, with 23 seconds left and had a chance to increase the lead, but Flo Luppani missed the front end of a one-and-one situation.

OCC’s America Robledo then stole a pass and teammate Tina Afan got the ball and started to drive toward the basket. She was fouled with five seconds left.

But Afan miss her free throw, and Trade Tech (7-5) got the rebound and tried to get the ball past half court before calling a timeout. But the clock ran out as several Trade Tech players and both coaches were frantically screaming for a timeout.

The Pirates (13-3) opened a 61-55 lead when Robledo made a layup with 9:46, left but didn’t score again for close to five minutes.

The Pirates’ next points came when Luppani (11 points) made a three-pointer with 4:51 left to put OCC ahead, 64-57.

Kathleen Kelly had a team-high 19 for Orange Coast, including scoring the first six points of the second half to put the Pirates ahead, 52-41.

Jamie Shine had 14 points and nine rebounds and Robledo had 12 points for OCC.

In the third-place game:

Saddleback 82, Southwestern 45--Magdalene Gorska made eight of 13 from the field and finished with 18 points for Saddleback. She and teammate Shannon Nelson had 11 rebounds each.
