GLENDALE : $1.1 Million for Projects Approved

Glendale Redevelopment Agency members has voted to allocate $1.1 million from the agency’s 1994-95 budget reserves for several projects that have been redefined since the original budget was approved in June.

When the agency, whose members also sit on the City Council, approved its 1994-95 fiscal year budget it was told that officials may ask for more money after several projects were better defined, said City Manager Dave Ramsay.

Adjustments approved Tuesday will come from reserves set aside for each project, said Jeanne Armstrong, director of redevelopment.

The vote provides greater funding for a master plan being prepared to redevelop the San Fernando Road corridor. Officials have already allocated $150,000 for the study--designed to improve the city’s industrial center--but need an additional $200,000 to complete a historical survey of pre-1942 buildings in the area.

Budget adjustments also will provide an additional $325,000 for a steering committee formed to implement the Greater Downtown Plan. This money will be used to hire consultants to do market analysis, planning, architecture and traffic studies, Armstrong said.

The final $600,000 will go toward development of a donor wall at the Alex Theatre, construction of storage space at the venue and the purchase of lighting and sound equipment.

Officials are unsure what funding categories will be included at the donor wall, which may be placed under a balcony railing so patrons can see it as they enter the theater.

Mayor Eileen Givens requested that agency officials use a portion of the $600,000 allocated for the Alex to complete a display documenting the 69-year-old theater’s history.
