ROUNDUP : Closer Not Enough for Northridge Women

The Cal State Northridge women’s basketball team is still looking for its first victory of the season.

The Matadors dropped their eighth consecutive game, losing to Southwest Texas State, 64-45, on Wednesday night in a nonconference game at Matador Gym.

For Northridge, which has suffered defeats by as many as 47 and 44 points, at least it wasn’t as lopsided.

Shannon Crouse scored 13 points for the Matadors, making five of 11 shots. Carrie Dormire had nine points and nine rebounds.

Marcie Atkins scored 14 points to for Southwest Texas State (4-3). Yolanda Wilkerson added 12 points and six rebounds.

In other women’s basketball games:

Canyons 85, Feather River 45--Kyetra Brown scored 27 points and had five steals to lead Canyons (11-2) in the first round of the Sacramento City tournament.

Kerri Garland grabbed 20 rebounds to go with 16 points.

Ventura 84, El Camino 46--Julie Hardy scored 21 points and Amber Magner added 19 for Ventura (10-1) in a nonconference game at El Camino. Tori Anderson had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Cerritos 76, Moorpark 56--Every player in uniform for the Falcons (9-4) scored in the nonconference victory at home. Guard Tara Knesel scored 16 points on eight-for-11 shooting.

Janette Oriza had 23 points and 12 rebounds for Moorpark (1-10), which had only seven players. Misty Goodnight had seven assists for the Raiders.

Moorpark led, 32-29, at halftime, but the Falcons outscored the Raiders, 47-24, in the second half.

Moorpark outrebounded Cerritos, 44-36. The Raiders shot 42% from the field, while Cerritos shot 41%.

Cerritos made five of seven three-point shots, while Moorpark made only one of nine.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Chatsworth 86, Los Altos 64--Junior Eddie Miller scored 19 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for the Chancellors (7-1) in a semifinal game of the Bonita tournament. Chatsworth will play either Bonita or Walnut in the final tonight at 8.

Jerome Joseph had 22 points and eight assists and T.J. McCoy added 18 points in Chatsworth’s fourth consecutive victory.

Chatsworth won the North Hollywood tournament last week. The Chancellors are ranked fifth in the region by The Times.

Village Christian 77, Head-Royce 45--Senior guard Dave Gustafson scored 29 points and grabbed a 20 rebounds for the Crusaders (4-4) in the first round of the Bell-Jeff tournament.

Gustafson scored 14 points and junior Kiko Banos, who finished with 24, scored 12 in the first quarter, when Village Christian used an aggressive press to jump to a 29-9 lead.

Head-Royce, a private school from Oakland, scored only 18 points in the second half.

Village Christian will play Bell-Jeff in the semifinals tonight at 8.

Kennedy 67, Maranatha 26--Jelani Janisse scored 14 points and Andrew Udvarnoki scored 13 for the Golden Cougars (6-2) in the first round of the Bell-Jeff tournament. Kennedy held Maranatha under 10 points in each quarter.

Pleasure Ridge (Ky.) 71, North Hollywood 64--Arthur Lee scored 23 points for the Huskies (7-5), but it was not enough to beat the Louisville school in the consolation bracket of the Las Vegas tournament.

Shawn Parris had 22 points and 10 rebounds for Pleasure Ridge.

Van Nuys 64, Reseda 59--Onaje Longmire scored 19 points and Van Nuys overcame a 12 point first-quarter deficit in a pool-play game in the Van Nuys tournament.

Van Nuys (5-4) scored 26 points in the fourth quarter and hit 10 free throws. Reseda drops to 2-8.

El Camino Real 67, Sherman Oaks CES 42--Cameron Henderson scored 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for the Conquistadores in the final round of pool play in the Van Nuys tournament. El Camino Real was 3-0 in the tournament.

Marvin Jones added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Conquistadores.

Montclair Prep 91, Kilpatrick 40--Reed Berglund scored 26 points and Anwan Jones scored 20 for Montclair Prep in a nonleague game. Jeff Benson added 16 points.

St. Bonaventure 60, Nordhoff 48--Sean VanGundy scored 14 points and Hank Laubacher had 13 points and 12 rebounds for St. Bonaventure (6-3) in a nonleague game. Brothers Alan and Herb Thornton and Matt Cresto all scored 10 points for Nordhoff (4-5).

Manoogian 68, Valley Torah 57--John Samuels scored 20 points and teammate Jacob Weissman added 15 points, 17 rebounds and five steals, but Valley Torah (4-3, 0-1) fell in the Valley League game.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Littlerock 48, Saugus 38--Cheree Hicks had 12 points and 12 rebounds--10 offensive--for Littlerock in a semifinal game of the Saugus tournament.

Hicks scored 10 of Littlerock’s 18 points in the fourth quarter. Jaime Foster added 10 points for the Lobos (5-2), who will play Victor Valley in the championship game at 7 tonight.

Notre Dame 41, Morro Bay 33--Maggie Dixn scored 16 points and Stacey Phillips grabbed 10 rebounds for the Knights (9-2) in a Santa Barbara tournament Green Division quarterfinal.

Thousand Oaks 44, Ontario 32--Sophomore forward Jenn Detmer scored 20 points and helped the Lancers (4-4) overcome a two-point third quarter to win a Gold Division consolation-bracket game in the Santa Barbara tournament.

Grant 54, Hamilton 50--Bahaneh Maani scored 14 points and had eight rebounds for the Lancers in the third-place game of the San Fernando tournament.

Grant outscored Hamilton, 36-22, in the second half. Kristin Kiley-Boynton had 17 rebounds for Grant (5-4).

Royal 75, Burbank 30--Sarah Parola had 25 points and six steals as Royal (3-8) defeated Burbank in a consolation round game of the Simi Valley tournament.

Taft 59, Birmingham 38--Sophomore Vanessa Dunn scored 19 points and Nyoki McKeith added 18 for the Toreadors (8-1) in pool play in the Van Nuys tournament.
