COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Murdent Scores 35 as Golden West Beats Phoenix

Julie Murdent scored a career-high 35 points as Golden West beat Phoenix, 96-64, in the opening round of the Fullerton women’s basketball tournament Tuesday at Fullerton College.

Murdent, a sophomore forward from Fountain Valley High, was 15 of 22 from the field and five of nine from the free-throw line. She also had 13 rebounds.

Farrah Magee had 16 points and 18 rebounds for Golden West (13-4), which plays College of the Canyons at 8:45 tonight.

In another tournament game:

Fullerton 57, L.A. Pierce 41--Fullerton fell behind, 11-0, but rallied to lead at the half, 29-16. Christa McDonald had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Hornets (8-8) who play Long Beach at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinal round.

In the Hancock men’s tournament:

Irvine Valley 95, Monterey Peninsula 78--Irvine Valley outscored Monterey Peninsula by 17 in the second half after the game was tied at the half. Rashad Wilson scored 20 points and Jeremy Garrett had 18 to lead Lasers (11-5).
