COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Alabama Deals Cal Its First Loss, 76-73

Jamal Faulkner scored four of his 13 points in overtime to lift Alabama to a 76-73 victory over 14th-ranked California in the championship game of the Otis Spunkmeyer Classic at Oakland on Thursday night.

It was the first loss of the season for the Bears (7-1).

Faulkner had missed a free throw late in regulation to help Cal force overtime.

No. 1 North Carolina 98, Old Dominion 79--Jerry Stackhouse was nine for nine from the field and four for four from the free-throw line in the first half to lead the Tar Heels at Norfolk, Va.

Stackhouse finished with 29 points for North Carolina (8-0). Old Dominion is 5-6.

No. 3 Arkansas 84, No. 20 Cincinnati 75--Corliss Williamson scored 27 points and Scotty Thurman 20 as the Razorbacks (10-1) overcame the Bearcats (8-4) in final of the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu.

No. 7 Duke 73, Boston University 54--Cherokee Parks scored 22 points and had 12 rebounds to lead the Blue Devils (7-2) in a consolation game at the Rainbow Classic.

Boston (5-4) was within 16-14 after nine minutes, but Duke went on a 9-0 run to put the game away.

No. 11 Syracuse 94, LeMoyne 54--Michael Lloyd had 16 points to lead five Orangemen in double figures at Syracuse (8-1).

Syracuse Coach Jim Boeheim had his starters on the bench before the game was eight minutes old and played his entire roster.

No. 12 Georgetown 87, Fairfield 42--Allen Iverson scored 17 points and teammate Othella Harrington 13 to lead Georgetown (7-1) at the Capital Classic in Sacramento.

No. 15 Michigan State 117, Ball State 95--Shawn Respert scored 20 of his 33 points in the first half to lead host Michigan State (6-1) to victory in the first round of the Spartan Classic.

Respert, who moved into 20th place on the Big Ten’s all-time scoring list, helped Michigan State break its Spartan Classic scoring record, set in a 103-60 romp over Central Michigan in 1985.

No. 16 Arizona State 67, Vanderbilt 61--Mario Bennett scored a game-high 22 points as Arizona State (8-2) held on in the championship game at the ASU-Tribune Classic in Tempe, Ariz.

Vanderbilt (6-2) had a final chance to tie the score, but Frank Seckar’s three-pointer from the right corner with 1:02 remaining bounced off the rim and into the hands of ASU’s Ron Riley.

No. 17 Georgia Tech 89, Oklahoma 85--Travis Best sank two free throws with 1.6 seconds remaining to seal Georgia Tech’s victory in the consolation round of the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu.

James Forrest led the Yellow Jackets (8-2) with 23 points and 14 rebounds.

No. 23 Nebraska 94, Delaware State 52--Tom Wald scored a career-high 21 points and the Cornhuskers (10-1) used a 23-2 second-half run to rout Delaware State (3-5) at Nebraska.

No. 24 Indiana 77, Arkansas Little Rock 53--Alan Henderson’s 28 points helped Indiana (8-4) build a big second-half lead in the final of the Hoosier Classic in Indianapolis.

Pennsylvania 79, No. 25 St. John’s 73--The two-time Ivy League champions (6-1) made 11 of 22 three-pointers to upset St. John’s in the final of the ECAC Holiday Festival in New York City.
