SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

With four minutes left in the second half Thursday, Ocean View scored the tying goal, but Fountain Valley won on penalty kicks after two scoreless overtime periods in the final of the Ocean View Holiday girls’ soccer tournament.

But Seahawk Coach Ron Uehle was not disappointed after the 2-2 tie and 3-1 deficit in penalty kicks. His team had reached the final for the first time in the tournament’s 13 years.

Ocean View (9-1-2) dominated the scoreless first half. But Fountain Valley’s defense, while haphazard, was effective. Goalkeeper Kim Rudloff stopped all four Ocean View shots.

“She’s on,” Baron Coach Brandee Craig said. “Yesterday Erin (Bottis) played in the semifinals, and she was on. They’re just switching off.”

Four minutes into the second half, Ocean View’s Kimberly Engesser took a corner kick. Rudloff seemed to have caught the ball at the near post, then dropped it and it rolled across the goal line.

But the view was different from Fountain Valley’s side. “One of our girls ducked and as our keeper came out, the ball ricocheted between her and the post about three times, then went in,” Craig said.

But sloppy defense nearly did in Ocean View, and Fountain Valley tied the score, 1-1, 20 minutes later when fullback Sharon Gillis scored on a free kick from about 45 yards.

Fountain Valley (12-1-2) then took the lead with a little more than five minutes left in regulation. After a throw-in, Diana Ginns passed to Karrie Layton, whose shot was blocked, but Layton got the rebound and passed to Debbie Blake, who scored.

One minute later, Krista Gaeta tapped Engesser’s corner kick through a crowd and into the net to tie the score at 2.

After two scoreless overtime periods, Uehle replaced goalkeeper Jacquelyn Knebel with Gaeta.

“Our goalkeeper has never played soccer before, and so she’s never been through that,” Uehle said. He said Knebel’s first game was Nov. 15.

Gaeta had never played in goal either, but Uehle said she had more experience in crucial situations.

Gaeta blocked a shot, then came out of the goal and got Ocean View’s only goal of the shootout. Cary Groseclose, Maura O’Connell and Mindy Miller scored for Fountain Valley.
