THE BOWLS DAILY REPORT : FIESTA / COLORADO vs. NOTRE DAME, Monday : And He Was Singing, ‘Hail to the Coach’

In 1977, Lou Holtz, now Notre Dame’s football coach, was coaching at Arkansas and got his team into the 1978 Orange Bowl against Oklahoma. But beating Oklahoma was to be especially difficult, since Holtz threw four of his players off the team for disciplinary reasons before the game.

And even after Holtz’s Razorbacks had pulled off a 31-6 upset, his problems weren’t completely behind him, since the four suspended players sued him and the university.

“But it was OK, handled just fine,” Holtz recalled. “I had this young Arkansas lawyer who took care of it just fine. Name was Bill Clinton.”
