COLLEGE BASKETBALL : ELAC Makes Last 2 Minutes Count, 74-70

East Los Angeles College mounted a late rally to beat Cypress, 74-70, to win the consolation championship of the College of the Canyons Tournament.

Trailing, 70-64, with two minutes left Thursday night, the Huskies tied the score when Alden Barnett and Alfred Durazo hit consecutive three-point shots.

On ELAC’s next possession, Durazo made a free throw to put the Huskies ahead. Cypress was then hit with a technical foul for trying to call a timeout after the Chargers had reached their limit.

Paul Celaya made two free throws and Dale Clark added another for the final score.

Durazo led the Huskies with 20 points.

ELAC lost by 32 points to Cypress in the Riverside Tournament Dec. 6.

East L.A. 34 40-- 74 Cypress 33 37-- 70 EAST LOS ANGELES--Celaya 13, Johnson 12, Barnett 7, Durazo 20, Lopez 10, Clark 10, Zaragoza 2.

CYPRESS--Kenney 12, Gonzales 14, Washington 10, Krauss 9, Cummings 8, Rutter 17.

Records: East L.A. 5-14; Cypress 13-6

Canyons 108, Trade Tech 73--Dwight Curry had 19 points and Roshone Owens added 16, but Trade Tech did not have the depth to beat Canyons in a first-round game of the Canyons Tournament Tuesday.

Trade Tech forfeited its Wednesday game against East L.A. because the Beavers did not have enough players.
