7 in County Killed in Weekend Crashes

Seven people died in traffic accidents in Los Angeles County over the holiday weekend and 248 were arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, the California Highway Patrol reported Monday.

The death and arrest totals were up from last year, when five fatalities and 228 drunken driving arrests were reported countywide, CHP Officer Garry Goldberg said.

Drunken driving arrests were also up statewide--1,148 this year, contrasted with 1,060 a year ago.

Across the state, however, traffic fatalities for the New Year’s weekend were down, with 27 reported over the weekend, contrasted with 30 a year ago.

The statistics are for the period from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday.
