A change in the course of the Santa Ana River in 1828 created a 30,000-acre marsh area with a colorful history.

The marsh was in what is today Fountain Valley. Soon after the wetlands formed, squatters established farms and homes on the fertile land, according to the book “Historic Place Names in Orange County.”

The squatters acted with such fervency during their group meetings that the area become know as Gospel Swamp. In later years, the squatters gained legal ownership.

The swamp area slowly dried up and is now covered with residential and commercial development.
