Man Held in Theft of CHP Cruiser
A man who stole a California Highway Patrol car on the freeway was arrested after he returned to the scene of the crime, authorities said.
Majeed Daou of Beverly Hills had been involved in a minor traffic accident on the westbound Ventura Freeway west of the Van Nuys Boulevard exit at 6:40 p.m. Thursday when he became nervous as a CHP officer arrived to take a report. He jumped into the officer’s black-and-white Crown Victoria cruiser and sped off, said CHP Officer Richard Perez.
“The officer still had the guy’s driving license in his hand,” Perez said. “But the guy realized he screwed up and brought the car back.”
Daou was arrested on suspicion of grand theft auto when he returned to the area an hour later, Perez said.
