HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Harvard-Westlake Second in Wrestling

Led by five first-place finishes, Harvard-Westlake High placed second Saturday in the Santa Fe Springs wrestling tournament.

Santa Fe finished first with 189 points, and the Wolverines were second with 185 in the 14-team tournament. Bishop Amat was third with 115.

Individual winners for Harvard-Westlake included Brandon Roth (119 pounds), Ron Linares (145), Matt Howard (152), Josh Eisenberg (171) and Hersh Davis-Nitzberg (heavyweight).

Eric Tom (130) and Rand Waldron (152) finished second for the Wolverines, who also benefited from a pair of third-place finishes and five fourth-place finishes.

Gold Coast Classic--Tom Nelford of Rio Mesa placed first at 152 pounds and David Johnson of Ventura placed first at 130 at Camarillo High.

Johnson defeated Ernie Bautista of Rio Mesa, 10-8, and was selected most valuable wrestler among lower weights. Bautista is a defending Southern Section Division I champion.

Westwood High of Arizona won the team competition. Rio Mesa placed second, Camarillo fourth and Ventura fifth.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Village Christian 57, Paraclete 38--Lindy James had 19 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists for the Crusaders (11-4) in a nonleague game at Village Christian. Trisha Palmquist added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Bell-Jeff 49, Rosamond 41--David Matekel scored 21 points for the Guards in the nonleague game at Bell-Jeff.

Matekel scored 13 points in the first half but the Guards could manage only a one-point lead at halftime.

But they outscored Rosamond, 14-8, in the third quarter to pull away. Tommy Gales scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half for Bell-Jeff (7-7). Shaun Murray led Rosamond with 17.

St. Genevieve 59, Bishop Diego 58--Joe Muller’s free-throw with 35 seconds left to play gave St. Genevieve (4-7) its second consecutive victory in a nonleague game at Bishop Diego.

Randy Iaccino had 28 points for the Valiants, and Mike Padilla added 20.

Christian Lopez led Bishop Diego with 12 points.

Villanova 65, Dunn 53--Matt LaVere had 21 points, 16 rebounds, five assists and five steals for Villanova (3-7, 2-1) in a Condor League game at Dunn. Griff Barkley added 17.

Village Christian 80, Paraclete 60--David Gustafson had 24 points and 17 rebounds for the host Crusaders (7-6) in a nonleague game.

Brentwood 65, Campbell Hall 59--The host Vikings outscored Brentwood by 13 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough in the Delphic League opener.

Demetrius Ingram scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half for Campbell Hall (5-8, 0-1).
