Fire Damages House, Kills Dog

An electrical short circuit sparked a house fire that caused $300,000 damage and claimed the life of a Rottweiler puppy--despite efforts by firefighters to revive it, authorities said Sunday.

About 25 firefighters responded to the fire in the 8900 block of Hanna Avenue at 9:39 p.m. Saturday and found heavy smoke pouring from the house, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze in less than 20 minutes, but not before flames and smoke destroyed the kitchen and another room on the first floor, Humphrey said. No one was home at the time of the fire, Humphrey said.

But firefighters discovered a dead Rottweiler between 4 and 5 months old in a kennel attached to the garage, Humphrey said. Two firefighters and a battalion chief tried unsuccessfully for about 15 minutes to revive the puppy.
