With Kennedy leading by four going into the final match, Cypress heavyweight Dave Wheeler, ranked third in the county, pinned his opponent in 35 seconds to give Cypress a 32-30 victory in an Empire League wrestling match Thursday at Cypress.
The Centurions (15-7-1, 2-0) trailed, 21-3, when John Schuster started the rally. Schuster pinned Jeff Wade in 3:27 in the 135-pound class. The Centurions went on to win five of the last seven matches. Kennedy is 5-9, 0-2.
In another Empire League meet:
El Dorado 65, Century 9--El Dorado's Ishmail Abdullah, ranked third in the county at 152 pounds with a record of 21-3, moved up to 160 and defeated Patrick Francis by technical fall. Matt Burnham (103) started the Golden Hawks' victory by pinning Adam Esparaza in 4:26.
In the Freeway League:
Troy 57, La Habra 7--Sophomores Mike Lee and Darrien Ommaney each won his first varsity match for Troy (1-1). In the 171-pound class, Lee won a 6-4 decision and at 125 pounds, Ommaney pinned his opponent in 5:18.
In the Golden West League:
Santa Ana 39, Saddleback 19--Though Santa Ana easily won, recording four technical falls and one pin, the only big surprise came at 119 pounds when Saddleback's Franco Lopez pinned Ignacio Bahena, ranked second in the county, in 1:19.
In the Orange League:
Western 30, Brea Olinda 27--Matt Frembling won, 9-7, in the heavyweight match to win it for Western (13-2, 2-0).
In the Sunset League:
Esperanza 70, Huntington Beach 6--Matt Flake recorded a pin in 1:40 at 189 pounds for eighth-ranked Esperanza (13-2, 2-0). It was Flake's first match since undergoing knee surgery four weeks ago. Esperanza won 10 matches by pin.
Los Alamitos 33, Edison 23--Scoring on a double-leg takedown, Nick Stiers beat Edison's Shawn Huffman, 7-5, in overtime. Ninth-ranked Los Alamitos is 8-0, 2-0.
In Century League girls' soccer:
El Modena 2, Canyon 0--The Vanguards upset the eighth-ranked Comanches (6-1-2, 1-1) on goals by Kaylee Whitfield and Nicole Terry. Whitfield's goal was her 17th of the season for El Modena (11-4, 1-0). Laurie Zemke and Jessica Dahlberg each had an assist for the Vanguards.
In the Garden Grove League:
Garden Grove 3, Rancho Alamitos 2--Polly Chittenden scored three second-half goals to rally Garden Grove (3-6-2, 1-1-1) from a 2-0 halftime deficit. Stacy Luce and Stacy Martinson scored for visiting Rancho Alamitos (1-2 in league).
Los Amigos 2, Santiago 1--Cecelia Zuniga scored twice and Marika Vaden had 10 saves for Los Amigos (1-5, 1-2). Bryna Sanchez scored for Santiago (1-2, 1-8).
In the Sea View League:
Irvine 4, Woodbridge 1--Shannon Philbin scored two goals for the fifth-ranked Vaqueros.
