PREP WRESTLING ROUNDUP : Calvary Chapel Gives Santa Ana a Closer Look

Share

Two weeks ago, Santa Ana Coach Scott Glabb took some of his wrestlers to watch Calvary Chapel wrestle Temecula Valley. As Glabb put it: “I wanted them to see that Calvary Chapel was not made up of supermen and that its wrestlers look just like them. I wanted to boost their confidence.”

Well, Santa Ana got its chance Thursday night to compete against Calvary Chapel, but unfortunately for the Saints, their field trip didn’t do the trick.

Calvary Chapel, ranked first in the state, defeated No. 5 Santa Ana, 41-13, in a nonconference meet at Calvary Chapel.

The Eagles (16-0), which had wrestled Wednesday night in an Olympic League Four-Way, dismantled Santa Ana (18-2) as they have every team they’ve faced this season.

All their victories weren’t easy, however. Joe Calavitta, ranked fourth in the state, defeated Santa Ana’s Mike Bravo, 10-7, at 132 pounds. Josh Holiday (154), Ed Mosley (162), both ranked at No. 1 in the state, and Mike Aguirre (191), ranked second in the state, easily won their matches.

But despite the dominance of the Eagles, Santa Ana managed to post some victories, including an upset at 147 pounds when Jaime Rodriguez beat Randy Meier, who is ranked first in the county, 6-5 in overtime. Heavyweight Juan Gonzales pinned Mike Pawasarat of Calvary Chapel in 2 minutes 46 seconds.
