SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Santa Margarita went on a 14-0 run midway through the fourth quarter, after Woodbridge had cut the Eagles’ lead to one, and defeated the Warriors, 61-49, in a Sea View League boys’ basketball game Friday at Woodbridge.

A strong third-quarter performance, paced by Allen Krist, who scored four times after rebounding his own shots, helped put the Eagles in position to get their 20th victory in 21 games.

The Eagles (20-1, 6-0 in league) outscored Woodbridge, 19-6, in the third quarter for a 43-35 lead and went up by 10 when Dennis Keane scored to open the fourth quarter.

Woodbridge (14-8, 3-3) rallied on a basket by Eric Ripley, a three-pointer by Mickey Brown and a basket by Todd Semm to cut the lead to three, 45-42. A steal by William Stovall and Chris Burgess’ dunk off a rebound put the Warriors within one with 4 minutes 30 seconds left in the game.

The Eagles then went on the 14-0 run to avert the upset.

Keane and Krist each had 17 points and Brendon Mulligan had 13 to pace Santa Margarita. Sophomore Chris Burgess led Woodbridge with 15, 12 in the second quarter.

Woodbridge, a 50-48 loser in the first meeting, took a 9-3 early lead only to have the Eagles tie the score, 16-16. A 13-2 run gave the Warriors their biggest lead late in the second quarter, 29-18.

But Santa Margarita rallied again. A steal and three-point play by Keane with 12 seconds left in the half and a free throw by Nick Maroutsos with two seconds remaining cut the lead to 29-24 at halftime.

Santa Margarita made 16 of 21 free throws; Woodbridge made three of seven.
