NOTEBOOK : Granville to Meet ’84 Medalist in 500 Open

Michael Granville of Bell Gardens High, who had the fastest high school time in the 800 meters last year, has entered the Open 500 at the Sunkist Invitational indoor track meet Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.

Granville, a junior, will be running against Danny Harris, who ran 48.13 to win the silver medal in the 1984 Olympic Games 400-meter hurdles. Harris, who is rated 10th in the world by Track And Field News, ran 48.18 in the 400 hurdles at Laussane, Switzerland.

As a sophomore, Granville ran 57.7 in the 500 meters to set the schoolboy national mark last season.

Running back Sirr Parker is keeping big-time company these days. Returning from a recruiting trip to Texas A&M;, the Locke High senior had home visits from Notre Dame Coach Lou Holtz of Notre Dame and UCLA Coach Terry Donahue.

Parker, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior, said is still undecided on the school he will attend, but Locke Coach E.C. Robinson said that Parker lists Washington, Notre Dame and Texas A&M; as the favorites.

The signing period begins Wednesday. Here’s a look at the some of the Central City’s top football players and the schools pursuing them:

Dorsey linebacker Darius Wesber (5-10, 220) has narrowed his list of schools to Iowa State, Missouri, Fresno State, Stanford, Purdue and Northwestern.

Washington quarterback/receiver Amar Brisco (6-0, 175), who has a 3.3 grade-point average, received a 680 on his recent SAT test, 20 points short of the NCAA minimum requirement for scholarship athletes. Brisco was being recruited by USC, Nevada-Las Vegas and Washington State.

Locke center Brian Battey (6-2, 265), who has a 3.6 GPA and scored a 790 on the SAT, is being recruited by Fresno State, Arizona State, San Diego State, and San Jose State.

Locke offensive tackle James Lewis (6-5, 230) said he will attend Arizona.

Jefferson High’s Eboni Wilson (6-3, 245), who returned from a recruiting trip to Hawaii, is also being sought by USC, Washington State, Kansas, and Oregon.

Jefferson running back Issac Hatley (5-8, 160) will attend San Diego State.

Loyola placed three players in Division I schools: offensive tackle Matt Pentecost (6-5, 270) to UCLA, defensive tackle Jim Ghezzi (6-5, 255) to Colorado State, and Dan Farmer (6-4, 195) to Cal.

The third-annual Revive Baseball in the Inner City Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Biltmore Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles.

The RBI program will induct six people from the Los Angeles area: former California Angels manager and Fremont High graduate Gene Mauch; former major league outfielder and Fremont graduate Bobby Tolan; longtime scout Rosie Gilhousen, former major league star Hubie Brooks; former Cal Poly Pomona manager and Manual Arts graduate John Scolinos, and former major leaguer and Jordan graduate Bobby Darwin.

Sports agent Dennis Gilbert will receive a special service award and former Crenshaw outfielder Bryan Murray and Dorsey pitcher Reggie Douglas will also be honored.

Another award will be given to honor California Angels president Richard Brown.

The RBI program and the awards dinner is sponsored by the Major League baseball.
