COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Hardy Has 49 Points as Ventura Wins, 89-83

Ventura College sophomore forward Julie Hardy scored 49 points, a Western State Conference record, in an 89-83 North Division victory over Hancock on Saturday night at Ventura.

The Pirates (20-1, 4-0) were playing their first game without point guard Amber Magner, who is out for the season after injuring her knee last week.

Hardy made 17 of 33 shots, including four three-point baskets, and 11 free throws. She made six of eight free throws in the final 1 minute 30 seconds.

Marina Reyes added 16 points, 11 assists and five steals for the Pirates.

Canyons 84, Bakersfield 61--Stephanie Labor had 31 points and 10 rebounds for the Cougars in a WSC game at Canyons.

Kerri Garland added 11 points and 20 rebounds for the 12th-ranked Cougars (22-5, 4-0), who lead the state in scoring at 84.8 points per game.

Tiffany Hogan scored 12 points for the Renegades (4-13, 1-3).

Glendale 57, Pierce 52--The Vaqueros (4-14, 1-3) opened a 20-point lead in the second half, then held on for their first WSC victory despite running into foul trouble.

Pierce blew its chances by missing eight of 15 free throws in the second half.

Kerri Peterson had 16 points for Glendale and Heidi Landiana added 13.

CS Sacramento 70, CS Northridge 55--The Matadors dropped to 0-17 by falling to the Hornets (4-17) at Sacramento.

Tannea Nelson scored 14 points for Northridge, which made 39% of its shots.

The Hornets, who shot 46%, got 17 points from Sarah Stapp.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal Lutheran 76, Whittier 72--Mark Heerema and Chris Dunbar each had 17 points for the Kingsmen (12-5, 5-1) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.

Antelope Valley 92, Cerro Coso 79--Jerome Payton made nine of 10 shots and scored 21 points for the Marauders (18-7, 3-0) in a Foothill Conference North Division game.

Troy Coutee added 17 points, Croey Bolton scored 16 and Orville Turner had 14 for Antelope Valley.

Glendale 83, West L.A. 69--Charlie Garcia had 30 points in a WSC South Division game at Glendale.

Maurice Sowells added 25 points and seven assists for the Vaqueros (11-12, 1-3), who trailed, 39-38, at halftime.

Bakersfield 70, Canyons 67--Sean Piatkoski converted a three-point play with 1:12 to play, giving the Renegades (12-12, 2-2) a one-point lead in a WSC South Division game at Canyons. Piatkoski had 26 points.

Steve Tampus scored 26 points for the Cougars (7-15, 1-3).

BASEBALL

The Master’s 4, Cal Poly Pomona 3--Dan Prentice drove in the winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning in a season-opening nonconference game at Master’s.

Pomona tied the score in the top of the ninth when Tom Magpoc singled home Ryan Milligan.

The Mustangs fell behind, 2-0, but took the lead in the sixth inning when freshman Derek Bell doubled home two runs to knock Pomona starter Eric Lusk out of the game. Bell was two for four.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

CS Northridge d. UC San Diego, 15-4, 15-7, 15-12--Jon Baer had 20 kills and Travis Ferguson made 46 assists for the Matadors (1-1, 1-0) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match.

Northridge had a .295 kill percentage and made 12 aces, including six by Jason Hughes, while UCSD (0-2, 0-1) hit .084 and had one ace with 12 service errors.
