VAN NUYS : Airport Staff to Ship Sweat Suits to Kobe

Share

Remembering the cold days and nights after last year’s Northridge earthquake, Van Nuys Airport employees are collecting sweat suits to send to quake victims in Kobe, Japan.

Van Nuys Airport staff members have enlisted the help of the Assn. of Airport Employees and Los Angeles International Airport to package and deliver warm clothes that are being donated by Valley community members and nearly 1,200 airport workers.

Once collected, the clothing will be flown to Kobe by All Nippon Airways, a passenger and cargo airline operating out of LAX.

“A lot of our employees know what it’s like to lose most of their belongings to a natural disaster,” said Van Nuys Airport spokeswoman Stacy Geere. “One Van Nuys Airport employee is still living in a trailer.”

The donation of sweat suits seemed the best help because the clothes are practical and inexpensive, airport officials said.

“We just want to make sure that they are warm,” Geere said.

“We hope they’ll accept (the sweats) as a gift from people experienced in a similar situation.”

Donations will be collected at the Van Nuys Airport maintenance yard from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Friday. For information, call (818) 785-8838.
