MaliVai Washington, coming off a defeat in the first round of the Australian Open, advanced to the third round of the San Jose Open with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lars Rehman. Second-seeded Michael Chang faced Jonathan Stark in a second-round match later Wednesday night and Jim Courier, seeded third, faced a first-round match against Steve Campbell.

Kent Kinnear, who played at Clemson before joining the tour, upset Alexander Volkov, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-1), in the opening round of the Dubai Open. Goran Ivanisevic, seeded second, lost to unseeded Andrea Guadenzi of Italy, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Australian wild-card entry Pat Cash upset No. 5-seeded Thomas Muster, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Winter Sports

Norway beat Japan by 28.2 seconds in the final cross-country ski portion Wednesday to win a two-man World Cup Nordic combined sprint relay in Lillehammer, Norway.

Americans Ryan Heckman and Todd Lodwick, both from Steamboat Springs, Colo., finished third, matching their previous best finish in a World Cup relay last Dec. 1 in the season’s opening event at Steamboat Springs.

Tom Condon said Jones, 28, a seven-year NFL veteran, has not considered retiring because of the medical emergency on Jan.11 at the Cleveland Clinic. He spent three days in intensive care. Condon said doctors have no explanation for the mishap.

. . . .Miami Hurricanes quarterback Ryan Collins filed a lawsuit seeking unspecified damages and accusing Miami Beach police of violating his civil rights by arresting him without probable cause. Collins was arrested at a nightclub last August on a charge of disorderly conduct. The charge was dropped in December. . . . The NCAA football rules committee has recommended that a tiebreaker system be used in football bowl games beginning next season. Final approval is up to the NCAA executive committee.
